Spreading Cheer Across Tacoma’s North End.

Supported and endorsed by the North End Neighborhood Council, ‘Holiday Windows’ is bringing cheer across Tacoma’s North End through a neighborhood ‘advent calendar,’ where a total of 24 residents and businesses have decorated their windows in celebration of the season.

Each day, between December 1-24, a new beautifully decorated window will be revealed at 6PM across Tacoma’s North End. The ‘Holiday Windows’ will remain revealed and up until December 31st, 2024!

December 21st

Our twenty-first ‘Holiday Window’ finds us at the home located at 3334 N. Gove St, Tacoma, WA 98406. This ‘Holiday Window’ is unmistakable, for at the Kathan Koehne home a very large and cheery snowman will greet you as you arrive! This snowman and the two children living in this house – Josie and Finn – wish for snow this winter, but they have had no such luck so far. Regardless, they are all hopeful! This happy and hopeful snowman was created by Celena Kathan and her mom, Sue Van Winkle, and her aunt, Phyllis Van Winkle. Special Notice: Please come by between 6–8 p.m. December 21 for live porch holiday music by a local UPS student/pianist, and stay warm with a cup of hot cocoa or hot apple cider and a cookie. This festive crew hopes to see you out (and braving the rain!) tonight!

Our nineteenth “Holiday Window” finds us in front of 811 N Oakes St, Tacoma, WA 98406. You’ll find yourselves in front of the Shelton’s home and their amazing “Holiday Window” entitled “Gertrundle, The New Year’s Octopus.” The Sheltons reflect that “their cats Fizz and Quetzi can be seen in their submersible looking for the New Year’s Octopus, who’s story follows. There are 253 giant pacific octopi living in the Tacoma Narrows. They all have stories. This is the story of Gertrundle, the New Year’s Octopus.

Gertrundle lives in a den among the wreckage of the old sky road in the Narrow Sea. The old sky road has been beneath the sea for Gertrundle’s whole life. She has a garden full of sea pens and geoducks, and keeps yard crabs. Most of the year she lives a quiet life. But at the turn of the Big Tide, when the sea pulls and the light starts to return, she starts preparing for her New Year’s work.

Gertrundle keeps a list of the Tacoma families that are good to her waters and her fellow sea creatures. On New Year’s Eve, she comes out of the water for one night to deliver gifts of thanks. She also keeps a list of families that are not so good. For those families, Gertrundle takes all of their holiday treats and brings them back to the Narrow Sea. She invites the ling cod, rockfish, harbor seals, porpoises, and all the other creatures to her den to feast upon treats of the not-so-good at a Big Sea Party.

Think of Gertrundle going into 2025. May your Narrow Sea gifts be plentiful, and your treats remain with you.”
